Hectic preparations on for 2016 Mahamaham
State government has sanctioned Rs 120 crore for various infrastructure works
KUMBAKONAM: With the next ‘Mahamaham’ festival, held every twelve years in the temple town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, falling on February 22, 2016, preparatory works for its smooth conduct are being done on a virtual war footing here. While several lakh devotees from different parts of the country take a holy dip in the ‘Mahamaham tank’ located in the heart of the town that festive occasion, the State government has sanctioned Rs 120 crore for various infrastructure works and even released the amount. 3
Mr N. Subbaiyan, Thanjavur district collector who reviewed the progress of the preparatory works on Wednesday said, during last Mahamaham held on March 6, 2004, 35 lakh people visited the temple town. For this Mahamaham, we expect a few lakhs more people.”
He asked the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) to expedite electrification works and Public Works department to de-silt tanks in the town. As many as 72 police booths, and 35 watch towers will be put up, besides 132 surveillance cameras will be installed. Barricades will be put up at 1163 places.
Buses coming from Mayiladuthurai and Chennai will be stopped at Chettimandapam, from Tiruvarur and Manndargudi at Srinivasa Nagar and those from Thanjavur and Tiruvarur side will be halted at Darasuram. The collector also inspected the various work spots.
