Osmania University students wear black on Telangana birthday

Students were also angry that while the entire city and government institutions were decked up by May 31 night itself

Hyderabad: Rather than celebrating the first Telangana Formation Day, a large number of students belonging to many unions at Osmania University organised protests wearing black badges at the Arts College, the epicentre of the Telangana agitation.

Angry with Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, students belonging to the OU JAC, Telangana Nirudyoga Vidyarthi JAC, Democratic Students Union, Telangana Vidyarthi Vedika, Ambedkar Students Union and other groups took part in the protests.

Students were also angry that while the entire city and government institutions were decked up by May 31 night itself, the Arts College building was decorated only on June 2 evening even though the building has been seen many agitations for separate statehood.

J. Kalyan, chairman of the TNV JAC, said he was detained by the police before he could take part in the protests. As police tried to contain the protests minor tension prevailed as some students resorted to violence and pelted stones after which they were taken under preventive custody and taken to the Amberpet police station.

OUJAC spokesperson M. Krishank, who took part in the protests, said, “It is sad that the students who ought to be celebrating state formation are forced to protest even after state formation because the promised job notifications for one lakh jobs have not been released and OU lands encroachments are not being cleared.”

He said the sacrifice of Telangana's students, a key reason behind of statehood, had been completely ignored by the government.

There was skirmish among protesting students and a small group of students raising slogans in support of the Chief Minister.
