New Andhra Pradesh NIT may offer more seats

TS doesn’t want to allow students from AP to access the home quota at the NIT Warangal

Hyderabad: The Union HRD Ministry is considering to increase the intake of the new National Institute of Technology to be set up in Andhra Pradesh.

This is after protests from the Telangana government last month and its reluctance to allow students from Andhra Pradesh to access the home quota at the NIT Warangal.

The NIT Andhra Pradesh was earlier granted an intake of 120 seats but it may now be increased to 480. Of this, the home quota would be 240 seats. However, a final decision is yet to come. AP HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said he will meet Union HRD officials on Wednesday.

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority business rules for JEE counselling had stated that only TS students would get exclusive 50 per cent home quota admissions in NIT Warangal. AP students would lose out on that.

The AP government had asked Union ministry to reconsider its decision and the latter asked TS if NIT Warangal admissions could be as per Article 371D.

TS Deputy CM Kadiam Srihari vehemently protested against this and said the 370 home quota seats in NIT Warangal are reserved for TS students and this can not be changed.

With this, it is learnt that the Union HRD ministry is considering to increase the intake of the NIT AP to 360 or 480 from the first year itself. If done, it would be unprecedented since new institutions always start with smaller intake.

It is likely that the decision may be taken in next few days although the proposal is only said to be waiting for a green signal from Union minister Smriti Irani.
