Man seeks euthanasia for 6 of his children suffering with rare disease

‘I am tired of taking care of my children’

Agra: In a heartwrenching story from Uttar Pradesh, a 42-year-old man has written to President Pranab Mukherjee, seeking euthanasia for six of his eight children.

Unable to cope up with the stress of taking care of his children, the man said he was forced to take such an extreme step.

His children suffer from a rare neurological disease called Canavan, wherein the patient suffers from seizures and eventually becomes paralysed.

"I am tired of taking care of my children. I'm a normal sweet shop owner, there's only so much I can do for them. That is when I decided to write to the President of India, pleading euthanasia for my children,” said Nazir.

Nazir also said that he would request the President to give his family financial assistance, if not euthanasia for his children.

In 2011, the Supreme Court regulated passive euthanasia, allowing for withdrawal of life-prolonging medical treatment for terminally ill patients.
