Kochi Metro stations to be major mobility hubs

All Metro stations will be developed on the lines of Vyttila mobility hub

Kochi: A high-level delegation including representatives of French funding agency AFD and CODATU, French non-profit organisation and Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) inspected the proposed Metro Rail stations to assess the possibilities of converting the areas as major mobility hubs.

The team visited Edappally, Vyttila mobility hub and Ernakulam South railway station on Tuesday and assessed their development potential.

Officials of AFD and CODATU are in the city for a four-day workshop to prepare a road map for an integrated transport system for Kochi.

The Metro authorities are planning an integrated urban transport model by developing other modes of transport along the Metro stations.

All Metro stations will be developed on the lines of Vyttila mobility hub, which already is a major convergence point of bus and boat services.

Seamless travel on a single ticket has also been proposed under the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA).

The four-day workshop organised by KMRL has sessions on ‘Participative analysis of the Kochi city, outside the Metro corridor’, ‘Construction of a metropolitan area to analyse interactions of the city with the Metro’, ‘Definition of a primary transport network, the metro being the backbone’ and ‘Focus on the need for a comprehensive mobility policy, to create an inter-modal network and free the city centre from car’.
