Infosys getting cold feet not first time

Infy paid Rs 75 crore as advance and was planning to set up a software development centre

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: IT major Infosys, now caught up in a row over its decision to back out from second campus plans in Kerala, is facing similar issues in Bangalore and West Bengal too.

While the issue in Bangalore has reportedly been sorted out after Karnataka chief minister assured them to address their concerns, the deadlock in Kolkata is continuing.

If it was lack of infrastructure in Bangalore, in West Bengal the Mamata Banerjee government’s decision to deny special economic zone forced them to issue a warning.

The software giant was allotted 50 acres of land at Rajarhat in West Bengal in 2010 while the Left Front was in power.

Infy paid Rs 75 crore as advance and was planning to set up a software development centre. But the Mamata government that succeeded adopted a land policy doing away with the SEZ status but suggested alternative benefits.

This forced Infy to sent a letter to West Bengal government last year asking to either grant SEZ status or refund the advance.

“We are awaiting a response,” said Infosys executive vice-president Ramadas Kamath U.

Last year, the company shot off a letter to the Karnataka government conveying that it was pulling out of the proposed 100-acre software development centre in the Devanahalli IT park citing lack of infrastructure and demanded refund of the money paid.

Even as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah offered to address the issue, the IT major stuck to its decision and wanted to shift the proposed facility to Bangalore Electronic city.
