New Delhi: In a shocking instance of apathy, a ten-day old girl suffering from heart ailment was refused treatment and turned way by several government hospitals here prompting the state Health Minister Satyendra Jain to seek an explanation from the hospitals.
Taan Singh, who works as a security guard in the National Museum, had a harrowing time seeking treatment for his grand-daughter.
"My grand-daughter was born on May 25 in a maternity hospital located at Lodhi road. A couple of days later she was shifted to Safdarjung hospital after her health deteriorated.
"She was treated in the emergency and an X-ray was performed on her seeing which the doctors there said we can take the child home as she was ok.
"But her condition became serious when we brought her home. We then went to AIIMS, Safdarjung, Ram Manohar Lohia, GB Pant and Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) hospitals but the authorities there refused to admit her citing bed crunch and other problems," Singh said.
After the incident came to light, Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain sought explanations GB Pant and and LNJP hospitals over why the child was not given treatment.
Meanhwhile, the child will undergo a surgery tomorrow at Indraprastha Apollo hospital, where she was admitted.
"We took her to Apollo Hospital. The authorities there admitted her even though we were unable to pay the admission fees," Singh said.
"The patient was brought to the hospital in a critical condition and was immediately attended to by our team of experts," Apollo hospital authorities said adding that she is admitted under economically weaker section (EWS) category.
"She is being provided appropriate medical care and is under constant monitoring and observation on ventilator support in the ICU," they said.
