McGrath backs Virat Kohli as Indian skipper

He feels Indian cricket is headed in the right direction
Mumbai: Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath feels Indian cricket is headed in the right direction with Virat Kohli at the helm. The young captain’s aggressive approach has found an admirer in McGrath, who feels the Delhi batsman backs up his attitude with his performance with the bat. “I like the way Kohli goes about his job. He is aggressive, in your face, but he backs it up. He is a class batsman. I think India is in good hands with a vibrant leader in Kohli, who is not going to back down.”
The former great also appreciated BCCI’s move to have Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman on the advisory panel. “I think it is great. Young guys don’t have
experience and these three have a wealth of knowledge. The experience they have you cannot put a price on it.”
Speaking at the sidelines of a promotional event, McGrath, who has been associated with MRF Pace foundation said he would not like to take up a coaching role at the moment. “I retired as I wanted to spend time with the family. Now when you are a national coach, you spend as much time with the team as the players.
“I have learned more about fast bowling at MRF in last three years than during my career. I think I am getting there so may be in the future.” With 563 wickets in 124 Tests at just 21.64 per victim, McGrath did not rule out a return to T20 cricket. The 45-year-old revealed he has been approached by Shane Warne for the proposed T20 league jointly planned with Tendulkar. “Shane approached me and I thought why not. I don’t miss playing. I’m lucky to have my body in good shape. When I get up in the morning I don’t have niggles or pain. We are looking at three T20s in the US in a year.”
The Aussie legendary pacer felt that the rise of T20 cricket has led to a dip in bowlers’ skills. “While T20 format has added more skills and value to a batsman’s game, I feel it hasn’t done the same when it comes to bowlers. They have gone down. They don’t execute their plans as accurately in T20 as they would in Test cricket,” said McGrath.
