'Uber driver tried to forcibly kiss me,' alleges woman passenger
New Delhi: A 21-year-old woman has alleged that an Uber cab driver in Gurgaon forced himself on her “trying to kiss and molest her.”
The victim registered her complaint over phone to an Uber representative following the incident on Sunday wherein the cab driver has been identified as Vinod. The accused has been arrested.
“When we reached my destination, he handed me over my two bags and when I asked for the third, he said he wanted to shake hands with me and said, ‘nice to meet you ma'm’. I thought he is a good man and so I casually shook hands with him. He then kissed my hand. When I tried to pull back my hand, he held it tightly and forcibly tried to kiss me," the woman alleged.
In response to her complaint, the Uber representative said, “We have a zero tolerance policy for this behaviour and I assure you that our team is following up with Vinod (cab driver) appropriately and immediately.”
However, the woman’s brother in a Facebook post alleged inaction even after registering the complaint with Uber and demanded punishment for the culprit.
“Even after registering a complaint with you (Uber) there has been no action, no update from your end,” he said, adding, they have complained in this regard to the Gurgaon police.
A first information report (FIR) under section 354 A (molestation) has been registered against the driver, according to Gurgaon Police Commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk.
In reply to the charge, Uber said, “Our team immediately reached out to the rider (victim) via phone within minutes of receiving the feedback. Multiple members of the Uber team have spoken with the driver to ascertain the sequence of events.”
The official Uber response also claimed that “immediate action has already been taken with the driver partner even while the matter is being thoroughly investigated.”
