Chennai: Schools re-open as scheduled
Chennai: Thousands of children went back to school after a good two months’ holiday on Monday. Even though there was speculation that summer holidays might be extended by a week because of the rise in temperature, more than 54,000 government and government-aided schools re-opened on schedule.
Director of school education, Dr S. Kannappan, said around 35,000 primary schools, 8,000 middle schools and 11,800 high school and higher secondary schools re-opened all over Tamil Nadu. In Chennai, 29 government schools, 154 government-aided schools and 70 high and higher secondary schools re-opened.
Collector of Kancheepuram and Thoothukudi said the schools were closed Monday due to local festivals and will reopen only on Tuesday. Ms D. Sabitha, principal secretary of the school education department, said welfare measures like textbooks, notebooks, uniforms and atlases were distributed distributed to around 37,141 government schools and 8,409 private aided school students studying from class 6 to 10.
Transport department officials say that the existing bus passes can be used by students as the renewal process will take up to 15 days. Private schools are expected to re-open later this week.
