Bengaluru: Lokayukta initiates suo motu probe against Karnataka University professor

He had allegedly demanded a bribe from students for issuing Ph.D completion certificates

BENGALURU: Lokayukta Justice Y. Bhaskar Rao has initiated a suo motu action against a professor of Karnataka University, Dharwad, who had allegedly demanded a bribe from students for issuing Ph.D completion certificates. Justice Rao has referred the case to the additional director general of police of the Lokayukta to take up the investigation under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

“It is alleged that Prof. Noor Jahan Ganiyar, Dean of Education Department, demanded a bribe of Rs 4 lakh from two students from North India for issuance of certificate of completion of Ph.D Course in Research. Reportedly, many students have recorded the demand on their phones and complained to the Registrar and Vice-Chancellor,” a press release stated.

“The university has issued a show-cause notice to the professor, but he has not replied to the notice. Such a demand by professors would not only amount to corruption, but also affects the image of the university,” the release stated.
