Modi to visit Israel, first by Indian PM
Sushma herself would visit Israel, Palestine and Jordan this year
New Delhi: External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said on Sunday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit Israel at a mutually convenient time. This will make it the first ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Israel. Pointing out that she herself would visit Israel, Palestine and Jordan this year, the minister took care to specify that there had been no change in India’s Palestine policy.
“As far as my visit is concerned, it will take place this year. I will visit, Israel, Palestine and Jordan. As far as Prime Minister’s visit is concerned, he will travel to Israel. No dates have been finalised. It will take place as per mutually convenient dates,” she said.
Faced with a volley of questions on Sunday about Mr Modi being so proactive on foreign policy, Ms Swaraj said a “proactive PM is a support and not a challenge”, adding that the government is working as a team. Pointing out that there is competition only among opponents and never among team-members, she also said the PM had not imposed any “restrictions” on anyone including her but that she herself prefers to keep a “low profile”.
Ms Swaraj also dismissed criticism of Mr Modi’s visits abroad, saying he had certain responsibilities as PM, adding that there was hardly any difference in the number of visits Mr Modi made and the ones that his predecessors made.
No Teesta treaty on Bangla visit
External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday said that the long-pending Teesta water-sharing pact with Bangladesh will not be signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country and that views of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee will be taken before making a final decision.
