Local residents organised election for president of Goddess Bagawathi Amman temple

Karur: When hundreds of men and women had queued up outside a local temple here, it first seemed they were waiting to offer prayers to the deity on Sunday. But it turned out that they waited to cast their votes in an unusual election conducted for the post of president of the local temple committee in Karur.

Official sources said election for the post of the President of Goddess Bagawathi Amman temple, near tollgate area here, was organised by the local residents, besides for electing office-bearers for the temple administrative committee.

While there was no contest for all other posts except that of the President, the local residents decided to conduct a poll to elect the head of the Temple administrative committee. Two candidates, Muthukrishnan and Sivakumar offered their candidature for the same.

The temple authorities then made available ballot papers for a total of 289 electors of whom 256 cast their votes in the election on Sunday. After the counting, Muthukrishnan was declared as President as he secured a majority of 141 votes. The voters then offered prayers to the deity and dispersed peacefully.
