KTU to introduce open book exam
Open book examinations are similar to traditional examinations in most of its procedures
Thiruvananthapuram: With examination malpractices on the rise, newly-set up Kerala Technological University plans to introduce ‘open book examination’ system for engineering undergrad courses, which will allow candidates to refer study material during examination.
KTU Pro Vice Chancellor M Abdul Rahman told Deccan Chronicle that the open book examination system would be introduced for the new subject, Engineering Design. If effective, KTU would consider extending it to all subjects. The open book examination being introduced on a pilot basis for the engineering design deals with engineering aptitude. Open book examination questions will be a test of the candidate’s intelligence and analytical skills and not a test of memory. The open book examination system has been implemented successfully by a few IITs as well as foreign universities. KTU would be the first university in the state to introduce the open book examination, Mr Rahman said.
Open book examinations are similar to traditional examinations in most of its procedures. However, the major difference is that in open book examinations, students are allowed to bring their textbooks, notes or other reference materials into examination centres.
In some open book examinations, teachers will assign a standard set of teaching materials or a standard set of examination questions to their students in advance so that students can prepare with assigned resources.
