Kerala police chief calls it a day

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The soft-spoken state police chief K.S. Balasubramanian will hand over the baton to DGP Senkumar on Sunday after being at the helm for two- and-a-half years and introducing many reforms in the police force.
The 1978 batch IPS officer bade farewell to his colleagues at SAP camp on Saturday Later, he told the media that the personal attacks on him by the then chief secretary Bharath Bhushan over a foreign visit had caused him great mental agony. He also opined that the police action against Maoists shouldn’t be violent.
“I could do my bit to transform our police force into a more professional one. Also the sensitive law and order issues were dealt with without much complications,” he said.
An alumni of Loyola Chennai started his career as the ASP Crime Detachment, Wayanad, and served as SP of Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Alappuzha. He later became Thiruvananthapuram city police commissioner, DIG intelligence and tr-ansport commissioner.
During his central deputation, he worked with organisations like the RAW and received the President’s police medal for distinguished services. He established the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) in 311 police stations and sorted out a 30-year-long seniority issues that had affected the AR Battalion. He was behind the establishment of 10 more coastal police stations and pitched in with new modernisation concepts such as cyber dome. The SMS alert system for the public and social media interaction were launched during his tenure.
