Youth, teen caught with counterfeit

Duo offered commission for their role

Chennai: Two persons, one of them a juvenile hailing from Rajasthan, were arrested on Friday night after they tried to exchange counterfeit currency at the suburban Beach railway station ticket counter. The police recovered 10 notes with a face value of Rs1,000 from the duo. According to railway protection force (RPF) sources, Praveen Kumar (26) and his 16-year-old associate approached the ticket counter at the Chennai Beach railway station with a Rs1,000 note to book two tickets on the Ahmedabad-bound Navjivan express.

Alert personnel behind the counter alerted RPF personnel on suspicion, and handed them over to sub-inspector Muthupandi.Investigations revealed that the two had stayed at an accommodation on Anderson Street in Parry’s and were involved in selling pens wholesale.“They were supplied with the notes from an unknown source and given a 15 per cent commission for their role. We suspect that they have been doing it for sometime now,” said a police officer.

The ticket counter staff became alert after the duo managed to exchange counterfeit currencies successfully two days ago. Praveen Kumar was remanded in judicial custody while the juvenile was sent to a Borstal school. The case has been transferred to the CB-CID for further investigation.
