Cleaning not to affect Hussainsagar sports
The cleaning project will not affect any of the water sports events scheduled for June
Hyderabad: The Hussainsagar cleaning project will not affect any of the water sports events scheduled for June. Apart from the first Hyderabad Water Sports Regatta — organised as part of the Telangana Formation Day celebrations — for the first time in Hyderabad, a 70-member team of the National Rowing Federation will perform a row-past (march past) on June 5, at around 7 am.
Organised by the Yacht Club, the Hyderabad Water Sports Regatta will include kayaking, sailing, rowing and canoeing. There has been no decrease in the water level of the lake and the outflow from the sluices and inflow from the Kukatpally nala are equal, said sources.
Suheim Sheikh, the president of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad, said, “Water sport bodies across the lake will be rowing, kayaking and sailing; this kind of regatta run by the state government endeavours to bring various institutions together on one platform, around five-six organisations will be participating. The state government is making efforts to divert the polluted water. The lake smells only during high summer; there has been a change in terms of water quality of the tank.”
The Regatta will be hosted by the Telangana Sailing Association in collaboration with Telangana Tourism department and will be conducted annually in tandem with the state Formation Day celebrations.
“The Monsoon winds are strengthening and the heatwave is expected to ease in a few days. After many years, the monsoon is likely to hit Hussainsagar on time, on June 7,” said B.P. Acharya, principal secretary of tourism and sports.
Greens miffed by time given to NGT Hussainsagar panel:
“The SC’s order says the expert committee should give its report expeditiously. However, the NGT gave the committee over 40 days. The bench should have asked the committee to submit the report before vacation bench of the NGT, New Delhi, that would have saved Hussainsagar from falling prey to realty sharks,” said an environmentalist on condition of anonymity.
On May 1, the NGT had ordered interim injunction restraining the respondents, including the Telangana government and the GHMC, from carrying out any construction in and around Hussainsagar.
The order was challenged in the Hyderabad HC which granted interim stay. SOUL then moved the SC seeking dismissal of the HC stay. The apex court on May 26 refused to intervene but said that the NGT can depute a team of experts to verify the work undertaken by the state.
