Hyderabad: The Customs department has sealed porous exit points used for  smuggling gold. Two GMR security staff have also been dismissed. Following a meeting of various agencies including the CISF, Customs  and others involved in airport security and anti-smuggling activities,  it was decided to seal the porous exit points immediately.
Sources in the Customs department said that vigil has been stepped up  to nab smugglers.

The Customs department has pointed out that smugglers are bringing in  less than 800 gram of gold that costs less than Rs 20 lakh to avoid getting arrested. A Customs official said, “The rules state that those who smuggle gold worth less  than Rs 20 lakh will not be arrested. The goods will be  compounded. So smugglers get in less than 800 gram and even if they  are caught, they escape by only paying a fine. Also, smugglers who are once caught at an airport are opting for other airports to avoid  surveillance.”
