Now, urban Mission Kakatiya
The programme was conceived by Karimnagar Municipal Corporation to increase groundwater level
KARIMNAGAR: Karimnagar MLA Gangula Kamalakar said that Urban Mission Kakatiya programme was being undertaken in the city to restore check dams for increasing groundwater table and to avoid inundation of low-lying areas during monsoon. He launched the programme by inaugurating restoration of a check dam on the premises of SRR Degree College here on Thursday.
As part of the programme, silt at the dam would be removed. The programme was conceived by Karimnagar Municipal Corporation to increase groundwater level. Three other check dams constructed across waterways at different places in the city would also be restored.
Addressing mediapersons, Mr Kamalakar said groundwater was depleting fast in the urban areas due to lack of rainwater harvesting systems. Similarly, low-lying areas are frequently getting submerged as rainwater flows back from check dams, which are having heavy deposits of silt.
In rural areas, the problem of groundwater depletion is addressed by reviving tanks as part of Mission Kakatiya programme. So, in order to improve groundwater table and to avoid submergence of low-lying areas of Karimnagar city, the identified check dams would be restored by clearing silt under Urban Mission Kakatiya programme,” he said.
