N T Rama Rao's statue at Pushkar despite protests
Chandrababu Naidu has decided to go ahead and install a statue of NTR at the Pushkar Ghat
Hyderabad: AP Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has decided to go ahead and install a statue of NTR at the Pushkar Ghat of Godavari river in Rajahmundry despite protests from locals. Mr Naidu announced it would be a special statue with NTR being depicted as Lord Krishna i.e. Lord Krishna’s character played by NTR in several of mythological Telugu films. The CM made this announcement coinciding with the birth anniversary of N.T. Rama Rao on the second day of the ongoing Mahanadu here.
The Mahanadu also unanimously passed a resolution demanding that the Central government confer the Bharat Ratna on NTR. “N.T. Rama Rao always said he knew no socialism or capitalism, but only humanism, and that he believed in working for the welfare of the people, particularly the poor,” Mr Naidu said.
“Today, we are talking about food security but NTR gave rice at Rs 2 a kg, and he also gave clothes to the poor in the name of Janata Vastralu,” he said. The AP government is also planning a grand tribute to NTR in the new capital of Amaravati. "People should remember NTR when they come to Amaravati. We will soon announce a plan," Mr Naidu said.
The AP CM also announced the revival of NTR’s Janata Vastralu scheme. “This scheme now is being named as NTR Cheera-Dhoti scheme. It will not only give employment to weavers but also give clothes to the poor. It will cost Rs 390 crore to the government exchequer as a sari and a dhoti each will be given to 1.29 crore BPL families in the state; we are planning to launch it on Dussehra," Mr Naidu said.
It may be mentioned that the TD’s move to install NTR’s statue on the Godavari on the eve of the Godavari Pushkarams in Rajahmundry is being opposed by locals as they contend that he was not connected to the region.
