Karnataka: Steep increase in engineering fee for CET

Colleges that charged Rs 33,000 as fee last year have been allowed to increase it to Rs 45,000

Bengaluru: The state government and Comed-K have agreed to continue with the consensual agreement over engineering seat matrix. The fee, however, will go up by Rs 12,000 to Rs 13,000 for CET students getting admitted to colleges run by Comed-K. As per the agreement, two slab fee structure for government quota seats in private colleges will be continued, in line with the previous academic year.

First slab: The engineering colleges that charged Rs 33,000 as fee last year have been allowed to increase it to Rs 45,000. These colleges can also collect up to Rs 1.50 lakh from the students of Comed-K All India Merit Quota. Second slab: The colleges that charged Rs 37,000 as fee last year will increase it to Rs 50,000 this year. But these colleges can collect only up to Rs 1.10 lakh from Comed-K All India Merit Quota students.

Forty five per cent of all seats in these engineering colleges will be considered as government quota and they will be filled up through the CET conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA). The new fee structure and seat matrix were finalised on Tuesday after negotiations between Comed-K representatives and officials from the state higher education and technical education departments.

The state medical education and Comed-K officials will meet on Thursday to finalise the medical and dental fee structure and seat matrix. The students are upset with the steep increase in fees. All major students’ organisations have already announced statewide protests against the decision.
