Skywalk project hangs in balance

Railways need to acquire land within week or else lose project tender
Coimbatore: The proposed skywalk at the Coimbatore railway station may hang in the balance for a while as the neighbouring mosque is delaying allotment of land. The railways have been demanding five meters of land from the mosque, located in front of the station, for erecting two pillars for the proposed skywalk which aims to ease the congestion at the station.
“The tender called for the proposed skywalk is about to expire in a weeks time. But the mosque management is yet to give its consent in writing to give its land for erecting the pillars. If we don’t get the nod within a week’s time, then the skywalk project may have to be postponed indefinitely. If we get the consent then the skywalk works will get over by this year,” said Salem Railway DRM Subhransu.
The skywalk connecting the entrance and the first platform was proposed to come up with two escalators. The electrification of Coimbatore- Mettupalayam route has got over and is likely to put into use in a month”s time.
Mr Subhransu said that the local body has come forward to give Rs 42 lakh to improve infrastructure at the Thudiyalur railway station, while LMW will take up development works at the Perianaickenpalayam railway station.
