CSR funds to help boost Central station amenities
Chennai: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) is looking to upgrade passenger amenities at Chennai Central station over the next three years by pumping in its CSR funds. Ashok K. Agarwal, Southern Railway general manager, revealed the plans on Wednesday while addressing the press along with Navin Tandon, Railway board member (Electrical). This comes in the wake of a directive from the railway ministry to upgrade passenger facilities across important railway stations across the country during the passenger facilitation fortnight — May 26 to June 9.
And while inaugurating the first unreserved coach to have 18 mobile-charging points at Chennai Central, Navin Tandon said more such coaches will be introduced in the future.
He added that the railways has over the next three years planned to add 1,000 MW of solar and 170 MW of wind power across the country and said stations and railway buildings will be equipped
with rooftop solar panels. He also pointed out that the railways was already generating 15 MW of power. Anupam Sharma, the Chennai Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) while responding to a query, said they were also exploring the possibility of opening state-run ‘Amma pharmacies’ at the station.
