Why Mathura for one year celebration: Sitaram Yechury

Modi government has not sat for any exam and so won’t give any marks, says CPM general secretary

Chennai: The CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday expressed apprehension over Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching his government’s first year achievement celebration from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. This is because Mathura is one of the three places, along with Ayodhya and Varanasi where Hindutuva forces wanted to build temples destroying existing mosques, he said.

The fact that Mr Modi had chosen Mathura to be the take off point for his one-year celebration itself is loaded with communal question. After Ayodhya, the target of Hindutuva forces had been the Viswanath temple and the temple at Mathura. In both places they wanted to destroy existing mosques to build temples. They claim this was where Krishna was born,” he told reporters after chairing the party’s TN state committee meeting here.

Mr Yechury said the fact that Mr Modi chose Mathura itself was an indication that in future communal tension was bound to rise. “This is going to create not only problems for the religious minorities and for the republican constitution we have but will also slowdown our economic growth. Because social strife and tension are abhorred by foreign capital,” he cautioned.

Strongly criticising the BJP government, he said, “There is a three-in-one attack on Indian people, which is on economic policies through communalism and authoritarian trend.” On “marks” for the saffron party, which has completed a year in office at the Centre, he said, “I can only mark those people who sit for exam, this government has not sat for any exam so far and so we cannot really (give) marks.”

Let polls come, will decide on tie-ups

The decision on electoral alliance in Tamil Nadu will be taken when the elections are announced, said CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury When asked whether CPI (M) would be part of the DMK-led alliance in the state for the coming Assembly elections, he said, “As far as electoral alliances are concerned, let the election come.”

He added the party’s state committee was competent to deal with it.In the recently concluded party congress, he said it was decided to focus on developing the party’s independent strength, and building mass movements on issues confronting the people.
