BBMP drive to clean up debris at Metro sites
Bengaluru: After BPAC members submitted photographs of 700 locations along the Namma Metro track, where garbage and debris have been dumped, to Upa Lokayuka, BMRCL passed put the blame on BBMP and private trucks that come late at night to dump the debris. Now BBMP has come forward to clear these debris sites. DC takes a look.
BBMP Additional Commissioner N.V. Prasad said, “The Upa Lokayukta has directed us to clear the garbage and debris at the metro sites especially at the median within two weeks. Hence, I have directed all the five zonal heads to start the process.” He further said that they were looking into the proposal to install CCTV cameras at some points to monitor littering at metro medians. “We will impose penalty on people littering these medians,” he added.
R.K. Misra, urban expert and member of BPAC said, “It took us about two weeks of time to gather these 700 photographs.” Regarding the present situation Vasanth Rao, general manager (Finance), BMRCL said, “I have about 42 km stretch under me and there are innumerable medians that come under it. People who are constructing their houses send trucks laden with debris and they find Metro medians an easy dumping ground. This takes place early in the morning around 3 am. We need a change in attitude and awareness among the people.”
Rao said that BMRCL collects 200 trucks of debris from Metro sites and dumps it at designated pits or dump in places where there is a requirement and get money as well. “So far we had made Rs 3 crore from the metro debris.”
