Police rescue Bihari youth from irate mob

Residents after they suspected he was doing a recce in the area to identify target homes

Chennai: A youth in his 20s, believed to be from north India, was caught by members of the public and beaten up before he was tied on to a pole at Guduvancherry in Kancheepuram for allegedly ‘trying to sneak into a house’ in Mahalakshmi Nagar area on Tuesday .Local residents overpowered him after they suspected he was doing a recce in the area to identify target homes. He was not able to explain his position as he was speaking in a language unfamiliar to the local people.

He was wandering around the area sporting a cloth bag filled with pieces of iron rod. He was rescued by the Guduvancherry police after an onlooker alerted the police about the incident.Preliminary enquiries by the police revealed that his name was Niranjan, a native of Bihar and was working at a construction site. Police took him to the station and later to a private hospital for treatment.

He appeared mentally unstable, police said. He was collecting iron scrap to sell in the local scrap market to meet his daily expenses, they said. No case has been filed against him but the police are trying to find out about the worker’s agent who brought him from Bihar.
