Bengaluru: Inspector suspended for making false arrest in hit and run case

The accused cop had arrested his driver instead for a personal favour

BENGALURU: A traffic inspector attached with Chikkajala traffic police station was suspended for allegedly trying to hush up a hit and run case and save a businessman involved in a road accident. The accused cop had arrested his driver instead for a personal favour. The accused inspector, Jagadish was caught red handed when a senior police officer, based on a tip off, visited the station and questioned the arrested driver.

According to the traffic police, on May 20, Bhavesh, son of Dinesh, a textile merchant in Chickpet, was driving his car in a rash and negligent manner. He hit a motorcycle killing the pillion rider, Ramachandra, and injuring the rider, Ajay, at Meenukunte on Hoskur road. Ramachandra died on the spot. The police reached the spot and shifted Ajay to a hospital, but did not arrest Bhavesh. Instead the next day they arrested his driver Teja.

However when Deputy Commissioner of Police Traffic (West ) S. Girish came to know of it he rushed to the police station and questioned Teja, who confessed that he was not present at the time of the accident but was made to confess to the crime for monetary benefits.

Girish let off Teja and directed the police to arrest Bhavesh and remanded him in judicial custody. Girish later brought this to the notice of city Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi and submitted a detailed report, based on which Jagadish was suspended. Ramachandra was a native of Hosadurga and a construction worker. Ajay is being treated at the private hospital.
