Khammam: With prices of smart phones on the decline and availability of Internet in cellphones, social media has entered the lives of people not only in urban areas but also in rural areas. The youth prefer to buy android version smart phones and learn to use WhatsApp, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Hike and Viber. Interestingly, friends have formed groups such as friendscom, manamithrulu, breaking news, friendsof1995 and others. They have been sharing ideas, news and subject material through WhatsApp.
P. Satish, an engineering student in Khammam, said, “We are able to share new things with the social media. Availability of 3G services help us access the media speedily.” “We can’t imagine the number of social media users in rural areas. It is definitely on an increasing trend,” P. Murali, a teacher said.
Some employees working in SCCL, BPL, KTPS and other granite companies in Khammam district formed into groups on WhatsApp. Many housewives have become accustomed to WhatsApp. They discuss and share ideas through it. WhatsApp’s arrival and subsequent proliferation seems to have rung the death knell for SMS.
K. Venkat Reddy, living in Aswaraopet, talks with his son in USA daily on Skype. “I hesitated first to change to smart phone but I realised that it is cheap and will help in conversing with my son,” he said.
