PM Narendra Modi: Breached power circles
Modi presents report card on completion of 1-year at helm
New Delhi/Mathura: The Prime Minister claimed that if the UPA-2 government had lasted for one more year, the nation would have been “ruined”. Going for the Congress’ jugular, he referred to “nepotism” and “damaad” (son-in-law) culture, a clear but indirect attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra.
“For one year have you heard of corruption, scams, nepotism, favouring sons-in-law of any leader?” Mr Modi asked the audience in his trademark style. “No”, roared back the crowd.
With Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on the move in his second avatar, Mr Modi kept the guns blazing. The PM stuck to his pre-election slogan of “achche din” and claimed while “good days have come for the majority” of people, for some “bure din (bad days)” have begun.
He said, “Jin logon ne desh ko loota unke aur bure din aane wale hain (Bad days are ahead for those who have looted the country)”. He warned that “bure din” for these people “will only increase”. The PM added: “I did not give a guarantee of achche din for those who have looted the nation for years.” Also, in a dig at former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said the previous government was run by “remote control”.
The Prime Minister also claimed that under the previous government a “power circle” was controlling the nation. “Abhimanyu had to destroy eight power circles. There were hundreds of power circles here. With your blessings, those hundreds of circles of power have been destroyed now,” he said.
Recalling how former PM Rajiv Gandhi had pointed out that only 15 paise out of every rupee sanctioned in Delhi reached intended beneficiaries in villages, Mr Modi said the NDA government had made arrangements to ensure that 100 paise of every rupee reached the intended beneficiaries.
While he talked about being pro-poor and pro-farmers, the PM did not make any direct reference to the contentious Land Acquisition Bill. Also, ignoring leaders of the Congress’ Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, particularly Jawaharlal Nehru, the PM spoke of “three great leaders the nation had seen”, referring to Mahatma Gandhi, Ram Manohar Lohia and Deen Dayal Upadhyay. He said these leaders had “shaped us in the last several years”.
Highlighting the government’s achievements, Mr Modi said his administration was dedicated to the poor, farmers and the deprived. The BJP will celebrate the completion of one year as “Jan Kalyan Parv” across the country till May 31.
