Institute tops in number of ‘star researchers’: Report

Hyderabad: If you thought the Indian Institutes of Management were the Mecca of management studies in the country, think again. The Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, has trumped the best IIMs at Ahmedabad and Bengaluru in terms of all-round research in management studies. This, despite ISB-Hyderabad still being a relatively younger institution. ISB-Hyderabad also has the highest share of “star researchers” among all the business schools in the last decade.
But, interestingly, it’s the dark horses that emerged the best in the country. Business schools in IIT-Delhi, IIT-Madras and Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, have been adjudged the best in producing quality research in the country, according to a comprehensive ranking developed by the IIM-Bengaluru and Xavier Institute of Management-Bhubaneswar.
Developers of the index say that despite growing emphasis towards research in business schools, the IIMs remain more of a training institute than destinations for quality management research.
Though known only for engineering studies, most of the IITs also have departments of management studies offering courses on business administration. Faculty at the IIM-Bengaluru and XIM-Bhubaneswar led by Dr Biresh Sahoo and Dr Ramadhar Singh developed a composite indicator of research productivity in Indian business schools over the last five decades.
ISB-Hyderabad was started only in 1996. While there is extensive emphasis on research in management studies in European and American institutions, it has been growing only now in India with a shift from teaching to research.
IIM Bengaluru and XIM Bhubaneswar faculty claim that their ranking is the most comprehensive among all. According to their index, Indian School of Business in Hyderabad has higher research productivity than all the premier IIMs, like IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Bangalore, IIM-Calcutta, IIM-Lucknow and also other high-profile institutes like the XLRI-Jamshedpur and IIFT-Delhi.
Also, the study, which was developed for the first time, said that almost 25 per cent of country’s most impactful researchers, termed “star researchers,” were at the ISB-Hyderabad.
