Thiruvananthapuram: Jewellery designing is an exciting career for those who have a good grounding in creative arts. These courses are available for graduates in any stream. One of the prerequisites is to have a fair sense of design and imagination. One should also possess skills to understand latest trends with sound technical knowledge.
Pay package of a jewellery designer may differ depending on his or her education and experience. A beginner can expect around Rs 7000 to Rs 8000 a month which increases with experience. A designer with adequate experience can earn in the range of Rs 18,000 to Rs 20,000 or more.
Freelancers’ income depends on their creativity and skills at self-marketing. However, jewellery being an ever-booming industry, employment opportunities are only rising. A successful completion of a course can get one a job. Those who have completed the course can set up freelance designing business or start retail and trading unit of their own.
One has to shell out Rs 65,000 for a one-year course and up to Rs 1.80 lakh for a two-year course. Short-term courses can cost between Rs 15,000 and Rs 65,000.
Some of the institutes that offer jewellery designing courses are International Gemological Institute, Mumbai, Indian Institute of Gemology, Delhi, Gemological Institute of India (G.I.I.), Mumbai, National Institute of Jewellery Design and Technology, Delhi, and Indian Diamond Institute, Surat.
In Kerala, St Teresa’s College, Ernakulam offers a one-year certification course in Jewellery Designing. Fee is in the range of Rs 42,000. JD Institute Of Fashion Technology, Kochi offers a diploma course in Jewellery Design which lasts between nine months and 12 months.
