DMDK uneasy with bonhomie

BJP has lost is credibility and it has no moral right to accuse Congress
Chennai: The relationship between DMDK and its ally, the BJP, has hit rock bottom with leaders of the national party attending the swearing in ceremony of AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa.
On Saturday, Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan, national secretary H. Raja and senior leader L. Ganesan attended the swearing in ceremony of Ms Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister of the state. While PM Narendra Modi and finance minister Arun Jaitley extended their greetings to her, DMDK chief Vijayakanth was urging the Karnataka government to file an appeal in the Supreme Court against the acquittal of Ms Jayalalithaa in the DA case.
A senior DMDK leader said the praising of Jayalalithaa and attending her swearing in ceremony only shows the opportunism of the BJP. “Till recently, the BJP’s Central leaders were warming up to the AIADMK to get its support for passing important bills in the Rajya Sabha even as state BJP leaders continued to oppose the ruling party here,” the leader said, adding that now Mr Radhakrishnan and BJP state president, Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, have started praising Ms Jayalalithaa.
The DMDK leader pointed out that Mr Modi greeted Ms Jayalalithaa on her assuming office for the fifth time. “Considering the high post held by him, Mr Modi should not have greeted Ms Jayalalithaa when an appeal can be made in the SC against her acquittal. He should have taken a non-partisan stand and refrained from greeting her,” the leader said, adding that the BJP has lost is credibility and it has no moral right to accuse Congress of practising opportunistic politics to appease its allies.
A section of DMDK leaders want their ‘Captain’ to snap ties with the BJP and to lead an alternative front against the AIADMK and DMK in the state while another section is in favour of joining hands with the DMK to defeat the ruling AIADMK government.
A DMDK district secretary said joining hands with the DMK will be suicidal as the verdict in the 2G spectrum case is expected before May next year. “Still a year to go for the Assembly polls. Captain will take a final call taking into consideration all the political developments and what will be good for the people,” a DMDK legislator said.
