Hyderabad: Coolers, AC sales shoot up

Several last minute buyers are also going in for air coolers
Hyderabad: Given the sweltering heat, the sale of air-conditioners and coolers has seen a 40 to 50 per cent jump in the last 10 days. Even shops selling locally-made coolers are doing brisk business and have increased prices in the last few days. “Each year, sales go down after May 16, but this year, sales picked up after mid-May due to the heatwave. TMC registered a 152 per cent increase in sales this week when compared to last year,” said A. Prabhu, sales manager of TMC.
Frequent breakdowns of sub-stations and feeders in the city are being blamed on the excessive use of air-conditioners increasing the load on the power transmission machinery. TSTransco officials said the sale of ACs is expected to cross 3.5 lakh in the twin cities this year. “As per inputs from various sellers, so far, nearly 3 lakh ACs have been sold this year. Last year, the sale figure had touched the 2.5 lakh-mark, and this year, projections show the sales will reach 3.5 lakh by the end of the season. The purchase of ACs alone is increasing by 20 per cent each year,” said a senior official.
Several last minute buyers are also going in for air coolers. “The price of all sizes of air-coolers has gone up by Rs 700 to Rs 800 in five days. We sold coolers two weeks ago for much lesser prices. Almost every seller has increased the prices due to the sudden demand. We have been getting 30 to 40 customers on a daily basis this week, and people are buying even at higher rates,” said Krishna Rao, a seller of locally-made coolers at Allwyn crossroads.
