Doctor’s bail plea rejected

Unable to withstand mental torture, wife killed self
Chennai: The principal sessions court in Chennai dismissed the bail petition of a government doctor who allegedly drove his wife, also a doctor, to commit suicide. The 32-year-old doctor committed suicide in Chennai following harassment by her husband and her in-laws.
Leaving behind a moving suicide note along with Rs 10,000, Dr K. Akilandeswari, 32, hailing from Thanjavur, committed suicide in a working women’s hostel in Kodambakkam on May 8, 2015.
In her suicide note, she pleaded with the police not to hand over her three-year-old daughter to her husband, apprehending that he would murder the child. She said, “My husband was influenced by his parents. I adjusted as much as I could, but they said I was not fit for his family. My in-laws want me to die because I did not give them money.”
She added, “Please give my daughter to my parents as they will take care of her. After the post-mortem, don’t hand over my body to my husband or to my parents. This is my dying declaration. I have kept Rs 10,000 in my handbag. Please use that money to cremate me.”
The Ashok Nagar police registered a case against her husband M. Rathinakumar, his parents, Maharajan and Poongothai, under section 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide). Akilandeswari completed MBBS in 2009 and married Dr M. Rathinakumar in 2010, with the blessing of elders from both families. During the wedding, Rathinakumar and his parents received 50 sovereigns of gold jewellery and other valuable articles. Rathinakumar also received cash for purchasing a luxury car.
However, Akilandeswari was harassed for more money from the beginning of the marriage. Vexed with the family dispute, Akilandeswari decided to pursue higher studies and joined MD in Bio-Chemistry in Madras Medical College last year. Her husband and his parents continue to stalk her over phone repeatedly, seeking more money. Unable to withstand the mental torture, she took the extreme step on May 8.
As she committed suicide within five years of the wedding, the RDO conducted an enquiry. Meanwhile, the police arrested Rathinakumar. His parents, who were absconding, approached the Madras high court seeking anticipatory bail. When the bail petition filed by Rathinakumar came up before vacation court judge A. Kayalvizhi, the judge dismissed his bail petition.
