Traffic disrupted as AIADMK cadres throng Chennai
Chennai: Traffic was disrupted on Saturday along Kamarajar Salai as thousands of AIADMK cadres took to the streets to greet party supremo J. Jayalalithaa after she was sworn in CM. The cadres, who came from different parts of the state, reached the city on Friday and camped along the Marina beach. “At least 500 vans came from the districts and they were all provided parking along the beach lanes,” said a traffic police officer.
Traffic restrictions along Kamarajar Salai were in place since 8 am on Saturday. Vehicles from Anna Salai towards Walajah road were denied entry and were diverted along General Patters road and Egmore and Central, leading to a traffic jam.
Thousands of cadres lined up along the convoy route as the Chief Minister reached the university and also on her way back. “We instructed our personnel to be patient with the cadres even if they tended to be unruly,” a police officer said. City police commissioner S. George was on ground coordinating with officers and personnel, the officer added.
