Three rounds for merit quota counselling

Proposal on seat allotment in self-financing engineering colleges sent to minister

Thiruvananthapuram: The higher education department has submitted a recommendation that at least three rounds of allotments should be conducted for merit quota seats in self financing engineering colleges.

At present admissions to these colleges are closed after two rounds and as a result, students admitted to these colleges will not be able to move on to even if allotted to MBBS or BDS courses after the second round.

Sources said that the recommendation was forwarded by higher education secretary B. Srinivas to education minister P. K. Abdu Rabb. In case the students wanted to migrate to such courses after the second round, they have to pay a heavy amount as liquidated damages currently.

The prospectus for the professional college admissions published by the commissioner for entrance examinations (CEE) says that in the case of private self financing engineering colleges, the date of closing of admission and levying of liquidated damages from the candidates discontinuing studies will be notified later.

Sources said the secretary also recommended not to concede to the Kerala Self Financing Engineering College Management Association’s (KSFECMA) demand that the provision in the prospectus for engineering admission that those seeking admission under management quota needed 45 percent marks in mathematics should be relaxed.

This recommendation was also endorsed by the Kerala Technological University (KTU) vice-chancellor Kuncheria P. Isaac to whom it was forwarded for opinion.
