Passport verification simplified
AP top cop J.V. Ramudu launches web-based passport verification service
Visakhapatnam: The AP police will be employing tablets and a web-based verification service called passport police verification service (PPVS) by May 30 bringing down the time frame for police verification of passport applications to three to four days from 21 days in the state. Director general of police J.V. Ramudu on Saturday inaugurated the Early Response and Command Centre (Vehicle Tracking System, PPVS and Jail Releasing Monitor System) in the city and provided tablets to policemen. The PPVS service is expected to be launched all over the state by May 30.
Explaining the new procedure, commissioner of police Amit Garg said the passport application received from the passport office would be forwarded every day to the field-level verification officer (head constable of special branch wing) through the software. The official will check the application on his tab, contact and meet the applicant, verify his credentials and send a verification report online to the Passport Verification Cell, which will then send the report to the passport official.
The new process will supposedly bring down the time consumed in passport verification considerably. Applicants will get auto-generated SMSes and e-mails about the status of police verification, added Mr Garg.
Meanwhile, if the applicant receives an SMS regarding the rejection of his/her application, they can go for a re-verification by approaching the grievance wing at the Passport Verification Cell.
Speaking on the occasion, AP top cop J.V. Ramudu said the web-application would immensely benefit the passport applicants as well as the police department. The jail release monitoring system for AP would also benefit the passport verification officials as they can easily find out whether the applicants have a prior crime record, the DGP added.
However, the DGP said that as criminals have also turned tech-savvy, there is a need to upgrade the jail release monitoring system by linking it with national data base as an offender can apply for passports from other places, where they don't have a record. Without mentioning the name of red sanders smuggler Kollam Gangi Reddy, the DGP said one such criminal fled India by submitting fake passport.
