Bengaluru: On the day AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa returned as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra said on Saturday that the Karnataka government is likely to appeal before the Supreme Court against the acquittal Ms Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case.
The state government has obtained the approval of the Congress high command to proceed with the case and to put Ms Jayalalithaa on the mat, sources in the party told Deccan Chronicle. Ms Jayalalithaa and three of her associates were acquitted by a single-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court last month.
Mr Jayachandra said that he has taken the legal opinion of Advocate General Ravivarma Kumar and Special Public Prosecutor B.V. Acharaya, who have strongly advised the state government to file an appeal before the Supreme Court.
Mr Ravivarma Kumar told Deccan Chronicle, “I have told the government that it is a fit case for appeal before the Supreme Court, as there are anomalies in the High Court order. I hope the government will take a positive decision."
Mr Jayachandra said that the Legal Department is examining the issue, and that the government will take an appropriate decision after going through the opinions given by the Advocate General and SPP.
