Girl battles disability to ace second PU exam

Preetha scored 89 per cent (533/600) in Humanities and aims to become a journalist

Bengaluru: She battled tuberculosis meningitis at a very tender age and was bed ridden for more than a year at Nimhans. Her poor health affected her vision and she lost sight for both eyes.

Her father quit his job in the army to be close with her. But her indomitable spirit helped her overcome all these odds and this year she passed PU exam with flying colours. Meet Preetha L, a student of Indo Asian PU College for Girls, Kalyan Nagar. In the recently announced II PU final results, Preetha scored 89% (533/600) in Humanities and aims to become a journalist.

Even for extra-curricular activities, Preetha never let her disability come in way and enthusiastically participated in various cultural programmes organised by the college. She sings, dances and even plays guitar. She also has been providing tuitions for other students, right from her eighth standard.

“My parents are my inspiration,” Preetha told Deccan Chronicle. When the young girl lost her eyesight a decade ago, her father left his job in the army to become a logistics manager at a company here. Her teachers, too, were very supportive. She studied using Braille books and made notes on her typewriter during lectures. If the notes were not available in Braille, her mother would dictate notes to her.

Preetha loves Psychology, but wants to become a journalist. She said, “I love to write. Even though journalism is going to be very challenging for someone like me, I don’t want to do anything else. I like challenges and I will prove that impossible is possible.”

Her father Lok Chandan was glowing with pride. “I was worried when Preetha lost her sight, but I’m not worried anymore. She is completely independent and capable of living a normal life, like anyone else. I feel blessed to be her father,” he said.
