Activists track down owner of abandoned dog

Owner discards cancer-affected Rottweiler, activists to file case
KOZHIKODE: In a first in the state, animal rights activists have successfully traced a man who abandoned his Rottweiler breed dog afflicted with cancer at Vattoli Bazaar in Balussery here. The activists are determined to file a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to the Animals Act and it would be the first invoking the law's provisions in the interest of pet dogs.
“We have long been waiting to catch people abandoning their pets. Usually, people use to throw them away at secluded places leaving no clue to trace,” said Sally Kannan, who runs ‘Save a life’ centre for pet dogs in Thrissur.
The Rottweiler dog was found a few days back on the premises of Girija at Vattoli Bazaar with a wound in its face. Though Ms Girija wanted to send off the canine, it didn’t leave. She then approached the police, animal husbandry department and Panangad gram panchayat.
From all the concerned offices, the reply was the same — kill the animal. Reluctant to do it, Girija shared its plight with her daughter in the US, who in turn contacted People for Animals (PFA) member Mariya Jacob.
“It was horrible to note that people are increasingly cruel to animals. But in this case, we are happy that we could identify the owner,” said Ms Jacob who alerted Ms Sally.
“The owner had earlier taken the dog to the Veterinary University in Wayanad for treatment. We got a clue about him from there,” said Ms Sally who sent Dr Sushma Prabhu to the spot and take care of the dog.
She said a complaint would be lodged with the police soon. Meanwhile, the dog is being taken care of by Dr Prabhu in Kannur and it would be shifted to ‘Save a Life’ for better treatment. Dr V. Rama Kumar, member of the Animal Welfare Board, told DC that 40 per cent of the stray dogs were those abandoned by the owners.
