Temples to be spruced up
Rs 41.13 crore allotted for revamping temples in districts
Rajahmundry: With an expectation of over 3.5 crore devotees from several parts in the country to take part in the Godavari Pushkaralu scheduled to commence from July 14, the endowments authorities are sprucing up as many as 595 temples located along the course of Godavari river at a cost of Rs 41.13 crore in Godavari districts.
The move is aimed for benefit of devotees to take holy dip in the river, perform rituals and visit the temples to have a darshan of the lord or deity and offer puja.
The major exercise on temples include: reconstruction, renovation, improving the amenities, securing the temple premises and giving a fresh coat of paint. The temple tower or entrance popularly kno-wn as Gopuram is being given a coat of light iv-ory while the wall is painted with dark grey colour and idols on the temple tower are being painted with mutl-colours. The painting of all temples is uniform in colours to ensure a good look and maintain sanctity.
With Rajahmundry in East Godavari and Kovvur and Narasapuram in West Godavari, are the main centres, the authorities are paying much attention to develop the temples and provide amenities at important temples. Accordingly, in Rajahmundry, the devotees are expected to visit the popular Kotilingeswara temple which was built in 10th century located on the banks of Godavari river.
The devotees of Lord Shiva visit the temple and the government is developing the largest bathing ghat in the country known as Kotilingala ghat spread over 1.2 km distance. Uma Markendeya Sw-amy temple located on the banks of the river is favourite choice to the devotees of Lord Shiva.
Bala Tripura Sundari Annapurna Sametha Visweswara Swamy temple is popular as the devotees believe that when they worship the Lord Visweswara, their wishes will be fulfilled. At Kovvur, Goshpada Kshetram is a famous place where four to five prominent temples are located along the course of the river in West Godavari. In fact, it is the second important place where more number of devotees are expected to visit after Rajahmundry.
At Narasapuram which is the third important place, devotees can visit Amareswara Swamy temple and Rajagopala Swamy temple and offer puja. Adi Kesava Emberma-nnar temple was built some 200 years ago. The architecture of this temple resembles that of po-pular Sri Perumbudur temple in Tamil Nadu.
In addition to them, the devotees will also visit Satyanarayana Swamy temple at Annavar-am, Venkateswara Swamy temple at Dwaraka Tirumala and the popular Pancharama temples located at Draksharama, Samalkot, Bhimavaram, and Amaravathi. Endowments deputy commissioner Brahma-ramba said, “We are developing temples to imp-rove amenities for the benefit of devotees.”
