Phase I of bund road thrown open to traffic
KOCHI: The first phase of the Thevara-Thykoodam bund road named the Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Road was opened for traffic on Friday. Home minister Ramesh Chennithala inaugurated the new road, a one kilometre stretch from Sastri Nagar to KP Vallon Road.
The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) which undertook the project acquired 95 cents of land from three landowners.
The road which was constructed at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore will help to decongest the busy Vyttila –Pettah stretch. The road has been developed using bitumen macadam and bitumen concrete on a five-year guarantee. The construction of the footpath and drain on both sides of the road has also been completed.
Benny Behanan MLA, Mayor Tony Chammany and GCDA chairman N. Venugopal also attended the inaugural function.
The road project of the GCDA which was stuck for nearly 30 years was revived after N. Venugopal took charge as the chairman.
