Coimbatore: A pleasure trip to Ooty turned tragic as two women died and several others travelling in a van suffered injuries after their vehicle rammed a roadside tree in Sirumugai on Friday early morning.
Around 20 persons, all family, from Karunanidhi Nagar in Peravalur were on a vacation to Ooty in the ill-fated van, which was driven by Anbu, 42. “At around 4.15 am, they halted for a while on the Mettupalayam-Annur road to have tea from a roadside shop. Then on nearing Kumarankundru, Anbu lost control of the vehicle and rammed the compound wall of a temple and then dashed into a roadside tree,” police said.
On receiving information, a police team led by Sirumugai inspector Selvaraj and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the injured passengers and sent them for treatment at the Mettupalayam government hospital.
Geetha, 40, died on the way to hospital while Kasthuri, 63, died without responding to treatment. After providing first-aid, the injured persons were shifted to Coimbatore medical college and hospital (CMCH) for further treatment.
Police said Mohan, 44, Yasodha, 43, Thiagarajan, 8, Kanishka, 3, Jayanthi, 55, Suresh, 34, Jayakumar, 22, Mohana, 60, Sakthi, 42 and Vijayalakshmi suffered injuries and are undergoing treatment. The Sirumugai police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
In another incident, G.Nedumaran, 30 and his brother Sivaraman, 27, who were riding a two-wheeler were knocked down by a car near Goundenpalayam on Friday morning. Police said Nedumaran had picked up his brother Sivaraman, who had returned by train and was heading home, when the mishap took place at around 6.30 am.
A car from the opposite direction rammed their vehicle after knocking down the barricades in the median. Police said Nagarajan, who was driving the car, lost control after a tyre burst. The two brothers, who were thrown off the vehicle, died on the spot. The Thudiyalur police have sent the bodies of the two youths for post mortem at the CMCH.
The police have secured the car driver and further investigations are on.
