Never expected it to become so popular: Brijesh Shandiliya

Brijesh who has sung the song along with Swati Sharma, shares his side of the story
Banno Tera Swagger, the song from Tanu Weds Manu Returns has become the talk of town. Its quirky lyrics and catchy tune has made it an instant favourite, with the song ruling the charts as we speak. Brijesh Shandiliya who has sung the song along with Swati Sharma, shares his side of the story.
How did Banno Tera Swagger happen?
My association with music Directors Tanishk and Vayu goes back a long way. We have worked on a lot of song scratches and ad jingles together. When director Anand L. Rai listened to the scratch version of the song, he loved it and wanted it in my voice. My joy knew no bounds. I have been working for nearly eight years now. When Banno happened, we never expected it to become this popular.
What is your take on the unusual lyrics?
When I first heard the song, I felt like someone was tickling me, it was so much fun. I was surprised that one can write such different lyrics also. This song is an amalgamation of good music, lyrics, arrangement and singing. That’s why it has worked so well with the audience.
Tell us a little about your journey in the industry.
I came to Mumbai in 2006 with the intention of becoming a playback singer. The next year I went as a contestant on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. I never used to watch any reality show, but when I got this opportunity I didn’t want to miss it. I got a lot to learn from my co-contestants that have stayed with me till today. After that stint, I went on to meet many music directors, sang scratches and got my first break in 2008, thanks to Sneha Khanwalkar and Dibakar Banjeree.
Hooriyan from the film Oye Lucky Lucky Oye was my first Bollywood song. I sang a lot of scratches thereafter but I’ve never got a full on dhamaal number like Banno. I have struggled a lot but God is great and one day he will reward you.
