Chennai students blaze a trail in Class X exams

27 toppers make Velammal school proud

Chennai: There was an air of celebration at Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School on Thursday. The 1,080 students of the school had every reason to celebrate, with 27 toppers and more than 100 students getting centum in various subjects. “I am really happy and will celebrate this day with my family and relatives. The teachers were really supportive and motivated us to a great extent. We did group studies as well. That helped us too,” said topper Revilla Laasya from Mogappair.

Her mother Ms R. Sreevani said, “ She made us proud today. We are planning something special. Today we will celebrate by having food at a nice restaurant. We are also planning a trip but have not decided which place.” Of the toppers, majority of the students aim to join IITs. According to some students who received 499, English was a bit confusing so they missed that one mark. The school helped them a lot and had loads of revisions through tests, which were conducted every three weeks.

Anu Keerthana R. who is the official topper because she took up Tamil as her second language, said that she would regularly write down what she studied to remember it as to avoid spelling mistakes. “I expected this result, and I feel wonderful. I would watch television for half an hour every day. I want to take up Biology for my plus-2 as I aspire to become a doctor,” she said. R. Manjari also scored 499 but since she opted for French as second language, she is not being considered the official topper. She is aiming for IIT and thus wants to take up Science. Apart from studies she is also a badminton player and has participated in the state level badminton championship and stood second in Thiruvallur district.

She said, “I played badminton till December and only after that I fully concentrated on my studies. For this result I would completely give the credit to my school. We also did group studies. That way it cleared our doubts and made us more competitive. That helped a lot.”According to Mr P. Paranthaman, Maths supervisor at Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, the syllabus was completed by November. From November end revision had started. He said, “We did not neglect any chapter and motivated students to study nook and corners of every chapter. We strictly corrected as we deducted marks even for spelling mistakes in Maths.”The school also provides separate coaching for IIT right from Class VII. They gad classes even on Sundays.
