TD changes MLC candidate
Prathibha fielded in place of Prabhakar as the latter is not an AP voter
HYDERABAD: Luck favoured Kavali Prathibha Bharathi, when Jupudi Prabhakar, a former MLC who recently joined Telugu Desam from the YSR Congress, could not file his nomination for the MLC polls due to ‘technical’ reasons.
In order to contest in Andhra Pradesh MLC elections, the candidate must be a voter of the state, which Mr Prabhakar was not. He is a registered voter in Kukatpally in Ranga Reddy district of Telengana. Due to this, the TD was forced to change Mr Prabhakar and choose Ms Prathibha, a former Assembly Speaker as the candidate. The AP Legislative Council elections are going to be held in four seats from Assembly quota.
So far, four candidates have filed their nominations. The final four will be elected unopposed and the officials will announce this after the withdrawals. The other candidate the TD has fielded is M.A. Shareef, a senior party leader. The TD has also given a ‘friendly’ seat to BJP, from which Somu Veerraju will contest. He too filed his nomination on Thursday. YSR Congress candidate D.C. Govinda Reddy had filed his nomination on Wednesday.
The ruling TD has no Muslim MLA in AP, as all the minority candidates who contested for the the party in the last general elections were defeated. As a result, there is no minister from the community in Mr Chandrababu Naidu’s Cabinet. However, TD sources said that Mr Shareef may get a Cabinet berth in the next reshuffle.
