Sea trials of Sindhukirti start
INS Sindhukirti sailed out for sea trials after its retrofit by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd
Visakhapatnam: Indian Navy’s diesel-electric submarine INS Sindhukirti sailed out for sea trials after its retrofit by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd on Thursday. It may be noted that the much-delayed retrofit of the Sindhughosh-Class submarine is expected to be completed after the sea trials and it will then join the Navy. The medium refit of the 24-year-old Kilo class submarine was to be completed in three years from the time the work begun, in June 2006.
For HSL, the refit-cum-modernisation of INS Sindhukirti presented a technologically complex and challenging project. The submarine is equipped with a modernised weapon package, including long-range anti-ship missiles.
HSL CMD Rear Admiral N.K. Mishra (retd) said, “It is especially a matter of pride for HSL that the indigenous content in this project has been substantial.” The yard has put in about 3.8 lakh man-days, supported by a team of Russian consultants to assist in issues related to the modernisation package.
