Curbs on liquor sale near ghats
Rajahmundry: In a bid to protect the sanctity of the mega religious festival and maintain the law and order, curbs will be imposed on sale of liquor during the 12 days fete of Godavari Pushkaralu. There will be no sale of liquor within either 50 meters or 100 meters distance from the bathing ghats and the authorities are yet to decide the distance from where no liquor sale will be allowed.
In the last Pushkaralu, the authorities imposed ban on sale of liquor wit-hin 50 meters distance from the bathing ghats. The move is aimed to avoid any trouble to the visiting devotees who intend to perform rituals during the event. The excise authorities are favouring the ban to be limited to either 50 meters or 100 meters distance from the ghats.
There is another proposal under consideration wherein the authorities intend to impose ban on liquor sale in the municipal corporation limits during the mega event.
Though a final decision regarding such proposal is yet to be tak-en, the excise authorities maintain that it may lead to a series of problems where there will be flow of illicitly distilled liquor and cheap liquor in the city when directions are issued for closure of all liquor retail outlets in the city limits.
In a bid to make quick money, the bootleggers prepare either ID liquor or cheap liquor using some chemicals which in turn affect the health of the consumers and in case of any major health hazard to the people who consume such liquor during the event, it brings disrepute to the state government for failing to control such liquor.
The excise authorities say that it will be ideal to impose ban on liquor sale in either 50 meters or 100 meters from the bathing ghats and maintain that all liquor retail outlets located within such limits will be shut.
