Brothels to be sealed
The main aim is to act tough against organised prostitution, they said
Visakhapatnam: In a bid to curb prostitution in Vizag, the city police with the support of revenue officials, has decided to seal brothels under a section of the Immoral Trafficking Act (Prevention). City police chief Amit Garg has taken the decision following a series of complaints on brothels being operated out of many residential apartments.
According to cops so far in 2015 a total of 3,282 cases, including those under Gambling Act and ITP Act, were registered in the city. The number was 5,669 in 2014 and 6,842 in 2013. In most of the cases, the organisers of the flesh trade, who were arrested for running brothel, have gone back to their old ways after being released on bail.
Meanwhile, Mr Garg has sent a letter to RDO regarding the issue as permission from the department (executive magistrate) is mandatory in order to seal the premises as per the law. He said that the department cannot wait for conviction after trial to shutdown the places as the process may take a long time.
Under the Section, executive magistrate (RDO) will order the sealing of premises which are used for the purpose of prostitution and exploitation of women, added Mr Garg.
Sources in police said in some cases there is a nexus between the owners and tenants, who were the organisers of the sex trade. The main aim is to act tough against organised prostitution, they said.
If the magistrate is convinced that a house, room or place is being used as a brothel, he may evict the occupier be it the owner or others and not to let the house or place be leased again without his approval, the sources added.
