Students to read aloud English, Tamil books
ChennaI: Soon, students from classes 6 to 12 in schools across the state will be seen reading aloud Tamil and English books in the classroom daily. In an attempt to enhance the reading skills of the students, the director of school education has asked teachers to make all students read aloud English and Tamil books every day to improve their language skills.
Director of school education, Dr S. Kannappan, in a set of guidelines issued to headmasters of all schools, said teachers should train students from classes 6 to 12 to read Tamil and English language books daily.
“In the first month, teachers should give priority to both writing and reading; later, they should continue it all through the year. They should not concentrate only on students in class 10 and 12 but all other classes, too,” Dr Kannappan said.Eminent academician and school education expert, Dr S.S. Rajagopalan, recalled that in the past, each student in the class was made to read aloud lessons on a daily basis, which later went missing from the classroom system.
“It’s good that the school education department has taken steps to make all students read language books, but they should not stop with language books but continue with books in other subjects too,” he said. Several reports in the past have pointed out that students in the country had poor reading skills and an initiative like this would help enhance students’ ability to read well.
